As spring warms and flowers bloom, the sun and gentle breeze will embrace the earth once more, with every plant and creature stretching out to awaken.
The "fireflies" of Sun Moon Lake are calling, signaling the perfect time for a family outing. Come experience the magic of firefly watching at Sun Moon Lake! These luminous companions that shimmered in our parents' era have seen their habitats diminished by development across Taiwan, making their survival increasingly challenging. Today, to witness their dazzling display, you must visit carefully restored ecological sanctuaries that bring back their former glory.
Balancing tourism development with ecological preservation, Sun Moon Lake has made significant efforts in habitat restoration. It has become a rare sanctuary where tourism and nature coexist harmoniously. The period from April to May each year is the prime time for firefly viewing, attracting domestic and international visitors eager to witness the enchanting spectacle of fireflies dancing in the night. Given the delicate nature of this ecosystem, visitors are required to strictly follow firefly viewing guidelines to help protect this precious environment.
To protect these precious firefly resources, please strictly adhere to the following guidelines.
- Prioritize your safety and avoid disturbing the fireflies' habitat. Please follow the guidance of tour leaders.
- Keep noise to a minimum. Do not catch or swat fireflies, and do not bring insect nets or boxes.
- It is recommended to wear light-colored long pants and long-sleeved shirts, along with non-slip shoes (avoid sandals or high heels) to prevent foot injuries or snake/insect bites.
- Please bring your own viewing gear, such as magnifying glasses, field guides, drinking water, notebooks, and personal medications. If you bring a flashlight, please cover it with red cellophane beforehand.
- Firefly viewing sites are often located on trails or in wild areas. Individuals with health issues or cardiovascular conditions should not participate.
- Firefly viewing takes place at night. If you are bringing children, you are responsible for their supervision (children in 1st grade or below are advised not to join). Do not run, jump, chase, or make loud noises during the activity. Parents must pay special attention to their children's safety.
- Nighttime safety is crucial. Do not wander off from the group. If you need to leave early, please inform the tour leader in advance.
- Practice light control. When approaching firefly habitats, turn off your car's headlights and refrain from using camera flashes or mobile phone lights to avoid disturbing the fireflies.
