Founded in 1974, against the backdrop of Puli's booming timber industry — which once supported more than 450 woodworking factories of all sizes — the three Shi brothers established Haishan Handicraft Co.
At the time, the factory produced large quantities of Christmas pyramids, incense wooden dolls, and other craft decorations exported to Europe. Notably, Haishan Handicraft Co. was one of the few woodworking factories in Puli that specialized in producing Nutcracker figurines and music boxes.
As times changed, the factory transformed into an experiential woodcraft workshop in 2012. Building on half a century of manufacturing experience, we moved from traditional OEM manufacturing toward our own brand design and marketing. We've preserved the factory's idle spaces and are committed to promoting Puli's traditional woodworking culture, honoring the value of the craftsmen who came before us.

Half a century of persistence, accumulated craft, and a journey of creative transformation
Haishan Handicraft Co. was founded in 1974 in Puli, Taiwan. It was established by the three Shi brothers, who had previously worked in agriculture before deciding to start their own business. In the early days, brothers Shi Kun-hai and Shi Kun-shan studied woodworking at a local factory in Puli. After Shi Kun-shan completed his military service, the brothers rented a plot of land beside their family's traditional courtyard house and built a tin-roofed workshop in 1974, formally founding Haishan Handicraft Co. They began producing and exporting handcrafted wooden goods, opening a new chapter in Puli's handicraft export industry.
In its early days, the factory focused mainly on OEM manufacturing — producing lathed wooden screws for wine racks and door curtain beads, along with simple spray-painting work. When traders recognized the excellent quality of the lathed woodwork, they began bringing German Nutcracker orders to Puli, prompting the factory to scale up production and handle designs of every size with ease.
The factory's early business centered on OEM contract work, focusing on producing lathed wooden screws and door curtain beads for wine racks, along with some basic spray-painting. As these products earned high praise from traders for their quality, German Nutcracker orders began flowing into Puli, causing production volume to surge. Regardless of size or style, we were able to handle it all with ease.
German Christmas pyramids were renowned for their intricate craftsmanship, with each pyramid assembled from a great many lathed wooden pieces. Their designs incorporated themes like angels and the nativity, capturing the peace and joy of Christmas. To make these pyramids, the factory used large quantities of timber from the mountains around Puli. Because assembly required extensive hand-gluing, part of the process was outsourced to homemakers in nearby Puli households. The factory also established a painting department dedicated to hand-painting the figures on the pyramids. These meticulously crafted pyramids came in nearly a hundred varieties and became one of the factory's highest-volume products at the time — marking a key milestone in the factory's transition from OEM subcontracting to producing and exporting finished goods of its own.
In early 1988, the emergence of a new material — POLY resin — brought major change to the factory. To adapt to this new material, the factory reorganized its production lines to manufacture a range of POLY resin products. From selecting raw POLY materials, mold casting, and rough-shaping to coloring, the factory completed the setup of these production lines in under six months and began production and shipping. The lineup included not only POLY products but also snow globes and other items. However, because POLY products required extensive hand-painting, the factory had to outsource the work to 300 to 400 female painters, while its in-house production line employed around 100 workers. In addition, Mr. Shi Kun-shan researched vacuum techniques for snow globes, achieving a completely bubble-free interior — earning the product a reputation as the finest snow globe made in Puli.
In 1996, Mr. Shi Kun-shan, one of the three brothers, took a bold step and traveled to mainland China to establish Haishan Poly Woodcraft Manufacturing. The factory specialized in small wooden goods and small-to-medium furniture, particularly jewelry boxes, music boxes, cigar boxes, tea boxes, and other box-type products. Over the following 18 years, Haishan Poly earned ISO 9001:2000 certification, becoming a manufacturer known for quality.
By 2010, Haishan Poly Woodcraft Manufacturing employed more than 1,000 workers, with a product range spanning 33 categories and over 6,000 styles. Our clients spanned the globe, including well-known brands such as Sankyo, Giorgio Armani, Estée Lauder, Tommy Hilfiger, Mr. Christmas, QVC, HSN, Ballard Designs, Improvements, and J.C. Penney.
In August 2012, Shi Wen-chieh, the second generation of the Haishan Handicraft family, founded Kokomu with a creative design vision. He took a distinctive path, shifting the business from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) to ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) and OBM (Original Brand Manufacturing), creating products with a unique style and local character. This was not only a continuation of his father's dream, but also an effort to preserve a memory shared by the people of Puli. Kokomu was founded in the hope that all of Taiwan — and indeed the world — would come to know that these exquisite Nutcrackers and music boxes were made right here in Puli, the legacy of over 400 woodworking factories and tens of thousands of craftsmen and painters. This achievement is an honor that belongs to everyone in Puli.
