Blue Roof Guesthouse

Around June 2008, A-Kai was pondering how the small "Shuittian Yi" (Patchwork Clothes) could create a grand vision. At the same time, Li Wen-Hsuan was contemplating how to keep the memories of Blue Roof alive. A phone call one day built the bridge between me and Wen-Hsuan.

After the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2008, a nine-day cycling trip around the island solidified A-Kai's resolve to move forward with Shuittian Yi and Blue Roof. The keys to Blue Roof were handed to me by Wen-Hsuan's junior at the National Chiayi University library, while two room keys were hidden in a flower pot. Thus began my journey with Blue Roof.

Initially, this guesthouse lacked sufficient water and electricity, meaning no air conditioning. Many guests even brought their own electric fans to stay cool during the summer, let alone the absence of internet or cable TV. We also faced several headache-inducing leak incidents. Idealism and reality intertwined throughout the actual operation of Blue Roof. (The facilities are excellent now!)

Yet, this guesthouse possesses a magic that deeply attracts me. Perhaps it is due to Wen-Hsuan's book, "March 4th Without You." I am someone who harbors both optimism and pessimism, confidence and insecurity. The atmosphere here allows me to transform life into beauty, vulnerability into strength, and pessimism into optimism. It turns the impermanence of life into power, allowing guests to depart with hope and longing.
 
Blue Roof is a guesthouse composed of white, blue, and green. White symbolizes purity, blue represents sunshine and hope, and green stands for staying grounded. Beyond serving guests through its environment, Blue Roof hopes visitors will carry hope and courage as they continue their journey.
